Camping
Camping is central to the Scouting program and one of the most rewarding experiences Troop 90 offers. Our Scouts spend nights under the stars across all four seasons, building skills and friendships that last a lifetime.
Why Camping Matters
Leadership Development
Scouts take on real responsibility outdoors — leading hikes, setting up camp, and making decisions when conditions change. They learn firsthand that leadership means owning both successes and failures.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Setting up tents, preparing meals, and gathering firewood all require coordination. Living and working together in the field teaches communication, trust, and how to resolve differences constructively.
Confidence and Resilience
Facing the dark, navigating unfamiliar terrain, and recovering from mistakes builds genuine confidence. Scouts discover that setbacks are opportunities to grow.
Independence and Self-Reliance
Hands-on skills — fire-building, cooking, navigation — foster self-reliance that serves Scouts long after they leave the trail.
Summer Camping
Summer camping opens up a world of adventure — longer days, warm nights, and some of Missouri’s best outdoor destinations. Troop 90 runs a full summer camp program each year, and Scouts learn to manage the unique hazards that come with the heat.
Key Hazards and How We Prepare
Heat-Related Illness
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks. We schedule frequent water breaks, seek shade during peak afternoon heat, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and watch each other for warning signs.
Winter Camping
Winter camping offers a beauty and stillness unlike any other season, but it demands careful preparation. Troop 90 Scouts who venture out in the cold months come back with stories — and skills — they couldn’t get any other way.
Key Hazards and How We Prepare
Hypothermia and Frostbite
Cold exposure is the primary winter risk. We require layered clothing (base, insulation, shell), staying dry, and monitoring each other for early warning signs. Hot food and beverages are always on the menu.
